The Cocktail Hour
The Cocktail Hour by A.R. Gurney Directed by Bronwyn Ruciak The Cocktail Hour is a delightful drawing room comedy that examines a family’s traditional values whilst simultaneously downing drinks. John, a middle-aged moderately successful playwright has just completed his latest play titled The Cocktail Hour which unhappily for other members of the family is a little too close to home. Bradley the patriarch, disapproves of what he sees as airing the family’s dirty linen, Ann the matriarch much prefers novels to theatre and Nina the sister wishes she had a bigger part. All set in a period not so long ago this dysfunctional family grapples with issues still so timely today. Familial roles and responsibilities, career choices and self-determination are all offered up to us with wit and humour. Bradley may claim that “... nobody goes to the theatre anymore” but you will want a ticket to The Cocktail Hour this September. The Burnside Ballroom will be transformed into a cabaret performance space complete with seventies cabaret band and, of course, cocktails! Sept 23rd to October 1st, at the Burnside Ballroom Enquiries to
